abstract = {Large pumping systems have emerged as one of the primary areas of energy consumption. During the startup process (SUP) of the axial flow pump system (AFPS), a complex interaction unfolds involving the motion of the cutoff facilities (COF), the acceleration of the pump, and the phenomenon of energy dissipation. The kinematic characteristics of the COF significantly influence the flow patterns, dynamic loads, and energy transfer experienced by the system. This study investigates the energy dissipation mechanism of a prototype AFPS (PAFPS) during SUP, utilizing a combination of experiments on engine starting characteristics, computational fluid dynamics, and in-field measurements of the PAFPS. Two COF motion modes are compared, revealing that accelerated gate opening improves transition efficiency and reduces energy consumption. Key findings highlight that accelerated gate motion minimizes turbulence-induced losses near the COF exit and suppresses high entropy production regions in the impeller domain, leading to smoother and more energy-efficient operations. These insights offer actionable strategies to enhance pump system performance during SUP.},

abstract = {For middle- and high-specific speed pump turbines, the hump instability appearing at large partial flow conditions seriously restricts its stable operation range. These phenomena relate closely to the inner unsteady flow in pump turbine. We investigate the characterization of pressure fluctuation and the mechanism of unsteady flow by an experimental and numerical study of the unsteady flow occurring among the adjustable blades. For pump working at either full or part load conditions, two kinds of periodic pressure pulsations in the diffuser vane have been observed and analyzed. A hump instability appears only when the actual flow rate of head curve is 0.45-0.75 times of the designed value, and our frequency analysis further shows that its appearance is closely related to the two above pressure fluctuations.},

abstract = {To investigate the influence of relative positions between a radial diffuser and an annular volute on the unsteady pressure at the centrifugal pump outlet, experiment tests were carried out with five positions between the diffuser and volute in an open test rig. Statistical and frequency spectrum analyses were carried out to obtain the pressure fluctuation amplitude range and the frequency domain respectively. The results showed that the relative position has greater influence on the pressure at large flow rate than at part load condition. The dominant frequency and the Power Spectrum Density (PSD) values are affected by diffuser azimuthal position and the harmonic frequencies are determined by number of blades and vanes. The investigation can give a reference to optimize the relative angle between diffuser and volute to reduce the pressure fluctuations.},

abstract = {The paper presents the results of numerical analysis on the local and global internal flow behaviour at the inlet of the vaned diffuser of a radial flow pump model, taking into account the effect of fluid leakages for various flow rates and a given rotation of speed. For each flow rate, numerical calculations were performed both with two different boundary conditions: - Without any leakage effects - With calculated leakage effects. The numerical simulations were realized with the two commercial codes: i-Star CCM+ 8.02.011 (at LML), ii-CFX 10.0 (at University of Padova). RANS unsteady calculations, with a k-? RNG model were performed with Star CCM+. Fully unsteady calculations of the whole pump were done with CFX with DES turbulent method (Cavazzini [1]). For each flow rate, different angular positions of the impeller are considered. First part of the paper shows global comparisons between numerical and experimental results already presented in ref [2-3], for which the effects of fluid leakage due to the gap between the rotating and fixed part of the pump model were found to be interesting to be analysed. Second part is devoted to the local comparisons of flow structures at the inlet section of the diffuser, without},

Several previous papers have already presented part of impeller flow characteristics mainly for vaneless diffuser and near nominal mass flow rate. This paper concerns the pump configuration where the diffuser blades interacted with the impeller flow. Each PIV measuring plane was related to one particular impeller blade to blade channel and analyzed according to different relative positions of the vaned diffuser. A fully unsteady calculation of the whole pump has been performed and comparisons between numerical and experimental results are presented and discussed for four different mass flow rates. abstract = {The paper reports combined experimental and numerical investigations of unforced un- steadiness in a vaneless radial diffuser. Experimental data were obtained within the diffuser using stereoscopic time resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) recording three velocity components in a plane (2D/3C), coupled with unsteady pressure transducers. To characterize the inception and the evolution of the unsteady phenomena, spectral analyses of the pressure signals were carried out both in frequency and time-frequency domains and the PIV results were post processed by an original averaging method. Two partial flow rates were investigated in detail in this paper. A single unforced unsteadiness was identified for the lowest flow rate, whereas, two competitive intermittent modes were recognized for the higher mass flow. Numerical analyses were carried out on the same pump by the commercial code CFX. All the computations were performed using the unsteady transient model and the turbulence was modelled by the Scale-Adaptive Simulation (SAS) model. Numerical pressure signals were compared with the experimental data to verify the development of the same pressure fluctuations.},

abstract = {The objective of the study was the experimental and computational investigation of the unsteady flow in the centrifugal pumps. This paper analysed the effect of the vaneless stator interference on the exit flow field of a radial pump operated in the DIM facility. High-response pressure transducers were used to determine unsteady pressure field at three planes at the pump and at diffuser inflows. The experimental data showed that unsteady pressure disturbances modes change when the flow was reduced. Detailed analysis showed that disturbances occur at distinct frequencies and that these rotated in the circumferential direction. Comparison of the pressure signals measured at two circumferential locations on the casing confirmed the characteristic frequency pattern to be a so called "rotating instability". This unsteady phenomenon was highlighted both at design flow rate and at low flow rates. The azimuthal distributions exhibited significant nonuniformities. The amplitude of this non-uniformity was sensitive to the flow rate. A simple model showed that, contrary to the common belief, the transport of the vane wake and secondary flows across the rotor was not enough to explain the magnitude of the variations. In this paper numerical investigations of the unsteady three-dimensional flow through the pump stage were also presented. Turbulence was modelled both by the k-? transport equations model, and Reynolds Stress Model based on the coequation. The effects of the tip leakage flow were considered by meshing the tip clearance between rotor blade and casing. Results showed the jet-wake flow pattern induced an unstable vortex, which influenced flow discharging from the adjacent passage and destabilised jet-wake flow in the passage. Both calculations and measurements detected the periodic fluctuations at impeller discharge which were found to be coherent from blade to blade and possessed a rich harmonic content. abstract = {Computations, made using the AEA Technology CFX-TascFlow code, and torque data, obtained in a purposes-built experimental ring, have been used to study the flow of the shroud-to-housing leakage flow in pumps. Tests have been carried out varying both the speed of fictitious runners and the axial clearance-disk radius ratio. Contrary to the relationships given in the literature, all the experiments have shown that windage loss power increases significantly by increasing the leakage flowrate. Moreover, an approximately linear dependency was observed, according to the expectations of a simple model suggested by the authors. The computed results also illustrate the mechanism with which the flow/rotor interaction is altered by the leakage. This is done through a comparative examination of the moment coefficient for a wide range of leakage flowrate and axial clearance. The conclusions of this theoretical study are consistent with experimental finding and have important design implications.},

abstract = {Direct and reverse operation of three radial flow turbomachines at part load conditions are investigated in order to evaluate the energy exchange between runner and fluid. Recirculation phenomena that occur at low flowrates interact with the blade passages with a net exchange momentum which has to be supplied by the impeller in pump mode, while reducing the one transmitted to the rotor by the fluid in turbine mode. Partial flow characteristic curves are also influenced in both operation modes. In order to highlight the role played by backward flows on the performances, the runnerfluid energy transfer has been evaluated from both velocity and power measurements. In particular, leakage and windage losses have been segregated and measured. The experimental results show that when recirculation phenomena occur within the runner, the energy exchange obtained from angular momentum equation only represents the work done by the driving motor on the discharge flowrate in pump mode. While it represents the net energy transferred to the rotor by the driving flowrate in reverse mode, that is the mechanical work available on the shaft when internal recirculation losses are taken into account.},

abstract = {The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) is an ongoing, longitudinal, multicenter study designed to develop clinical, imaging, genetic, and biochemical biomarkers for the early detection and tracking of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The study aimed to enroll 400 subjects with early mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 200 subjects with early AD, and 200 normal control subjects; $67 million funding was provided by both the public and private sectors, including the National Institute on Aging, 13 pharmaceutical companies, and 2 foundations that provided support through the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. This article reviews all papers published since the inception of the initiative and summarizes the results as of February 2011. The major accomplishments of ADNI have been as follows: (1) the development of standardized methods for clinical tests, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers in a multicenter setting; (2) elucidation of the patterns and rates of change of imaging and CSF biomarker measurements in control subjects, MCI patients, and AD patients. CSF biomarkers are consistent with disease trajectories predicted by beta-amyloid cascade (Hardy, J Alzheimers Dis 2006;9(Suppl 3):151-3) and tau-mediated neurodegeneration hypotheses for AD, whereas brain atrophy and hypometabolism levels show predicted patterns but exhibit differing rates of change depending on region and disease severity; (3) the assessment of alternative methods of diagnostic categorization. Currently, the best classifiers combine optimum features from multiple modalities, including MRI, [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose-PET, CSF biomarkers, and clinical tests; (4) the development of methods for the early detection of AD. CSF biomarkers, beta-amyloid 42 and tau, as well as amyloid PET may reflect the earliest steps in AD pathology in mildly symptomatic or even nonsymptomatic subjects, and are leading candidates for the detection of AD in its preclinical stages; (5) the improvement of clinical trial efficiency through the identification of subjects most likely to undergo imminent future clinical decline and the use of more sensitive outcome measures to reduce sample sizes. Baseline cognitive and/or MRI measures generally predicted future decline better than other modalities, whereas MRI measures of change were shown to be the most efficient outcome measures; (6) the confirmation of the AD risk loci CLU, CR1, and PICALM and the identification of novel candidate risk loci; (7) worldwide impact through the establishment of ADNI-like programs in Europe, Asia, and Australia; (8) understanding the biology and pathobiology of normal aging, MCI, and AD through integration of ADNI biomarker data with clinical data from ADNI to stimulate research that will resolve controversies about competing hypotheses on the etiopathogenesis of AD, thereby advancing efforts to find disease-modifying drugs for AD; and (9) the establishment of infrastructure to allow sharing of all raw and processed data without embargo to interested scientific investigators throughout the world. The ADNI study was extended by a 2-year Grand Opportunities grant in 2009 and a renewal of ADNI (ADNI-2) in October 2010 through to 2016, with enrollment of an additional 550 participants},
