Course content

The aim of the course is to give students the basic knowledge on the methods of manufacture and handling of nanomaterials and nanostructures and their main properties.

Chemical synthesis of nanoparticles (metallic, semiconductors, oxides), physical properties, applications. Chemical synthesis of nanorods, nanowires and nanotubes (metals and semiconductors), physical properties, applications. Methods of deposition of thin films (dipping, spinning, capillary flow). Nanostructures obtained by physical methods: lithography and microfabrication. Ceramic and polymer nanocomposites: synthesis and properties. Part of the lessons will be conducted in the laboratory where students will synthesize and characterize different types of nanomaterials. There will also be educational visits at research laboratories that deal with nanotechnology.

How to take the exam

The exam can be taken in English or Italian. Each student will prepare written reports on the activities carried out in the laboratory that must be submitted by the dates specified by the instructor during the course. The final grade will be determined as follows:

– Reports*: for every report from 2 to 5 points, distributed as follows: 0.5-2 scientific correctness; 1-2 completeness; 0.5-1 form; Total number of reports: 4.

– Frequency of labs: up to 10 points, the frequency at each experiemntal laboratory is entitled to 2.5 point (including the tutorial after the lab), student must attend at least 3 experimental laboratories.

– Extra points: attending the bibliometrics lab; frequency of specific seminar; attending the educational visit. Students that will deliver the report at the deadline of January or February, will get 2 extra points, and 1 extra point for the March deadline.

The Exam Session will be every month (at least one session – see in Uniweb)

* The 4 reports (all together) must be delivered not later than the posted dedaline (see in Uniweb) in order to be evaluated within 1-2 weeks.

Students who do not attend lectures will have to take an oral examination based on the material provided in the webpage and will present a monograph.
