Final meeting ASI-ISTAR project
After three incredible years of dedication, collaboration, and groundbreaking work, the ISTAR project has officially reached its final milestone!
Led by Politecnico di Milano and supported by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the ISTAR project focused on critical topics in modern astronautics. Specifically, it addressed space debris, Space Situational Awareness (SSA), Space Traffic Management (STM), and the overall sustainability of near-Earth orbits.
The final meeting took place at ASI headquarters in Rome on July 20th–21st. During this event, representatives from ASI, Politecnico di Milano, University of Napoli, University of Padova and Aeronautica Militare gathered to discuss and share the overall outcomes of this three-year initiative.
In particular, the Space Debris Group was represented by Dr. Lorenzo Olivieri, Mr. Stefano Lopresti and Mr. Antonio Nicolino. First, the team presented their progress from the past six months. Additionally, they recapped the main milestones achieved during the support of the ASI-ISTAR project.
Among the main outcomes, as the achievement of a three-year effort of the Space Debris Group, the following can be cited:
- Advanced Sensor Technology: The development of a transparent sensor designed to detect sub-millimeter debris collisions.
- Breakup Models: The presentation of CISAS’ OMBRA V1.0, the first Italian empirical breakup model. Furthermore, the group showcased the advancements made to the semi-empirical breakup model: the Collision Simulation Tool Solver (CSTS).
- Testing & Simulation: Key insights from simulation activities and hypervelocity experimental campaigns conducted at the University of Padua’s facilities.
