{"id":704,"date":"2019-12-07T15:13:09","date_gmt":"2019-12-07T14:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.dii.unipd.it\/lasa\/?page_id=704"},"modified":"2019-12-13T21:41:14","modified_gmt":"2019-12-13T20:41:14","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.dii.unipd.it\/lasa\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"RESEARCH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Recent research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Recent research at LASA includes: monitoring\/modeling of nutrient loads discharged to surface water bodies (e.g. Venice lagoon, Adriatic Sea) and generated by natural\/human processes in catchments; diffuse pollution of water bodies; energy, nutrient and pollutant cycling in water bodies; monitoring\/modeling of aquatic primary production; eutrophication models; fishery models; food web models; ecotoxicological models of rivers; analysis of long term ecological time series; design, monitoring and modeling of multi-functional reconstructed water treatment wetlands; monitoring of river, channel and wetland waters; integrated water resources management; modeling of aquatic ecosystems and ecosystem services; economic valuation of ecosystem services; integrated approaches to the management of water bodies, e.g. in coastal zones; air quality and odor dispersion modeling.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"facilities\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">LASA is equipped with chemical laboratory facilities in Padova including technical instrumentation for water quality\u00a0analysis, with field sampling instrumentation and with a computer modelling laboratory.(<a href=\"#monitoring\"><i>more &#8230;.)<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>History and experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">LASA was founded at the beginning of the 1980\u2019s by a group of researchers working on reduction and\u00a0modelling of diffuse pollution from agricultural activities. The director was prof. Franco Zingales (then director of the Institute of Industrial Chemistry).\u00a0Initial research focused on nutrient loads discharged into the Lagoon of Venice generated by agricultural activities\u00a0in the drainage basin of the Lagoon. Under the direction of Prof. Giuseppe <span class=\"SpellE\">Bendoricchio<\/span>, research activities focused more generally on modelling and control of environmental systems. At present, LASA is coordinated by Prof. Luca Palmeri. Over its four decades of activity, LASA has carried out research on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\">evolution of agricultural diffuse pollutant<br \/>\nloads into the Lagoon of Venice<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\">modelling agricultural diffuse pollution at<br \/>\nfield-scale;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\">evolution of pollutant loads in several lakes;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\">modelling of the nutrient loads evolution at<br \/>\nfield scale;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\">modelling of macroalgal and acquatic plants<br class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/result\/rcn\/50751_en.html\">ELME<\/a> \u2013 <span class=\"SpellE\"><span class=\"GramE\">European<\/span><\/span> research project (FP6) for the<br \/>\nevaluation of lifestyle impact on marine ecosystems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.incofish.org\">INCOFISH<\/a> \u2013 <span class=\"SpellE\"><span class=\"GramE\">European<\/span><\/span> research project (FP6) for the integration of multiple<br \/>\ndemands on coastal zones, with emphasis on aquatic ecosystems and fisheries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.knowseas.com\">KnowSeas<\/a> \u2013 <span class=\"SpellE\"><span class=\"GramE\">European<\/span><\/span> research project (FP7) with the goal of providing<br \/>\na comprehensive scientific knowledge base and practical guidance<br \/>\nfor the application of the Ecosystem Approach to the sustainble development<br \/>\nof Europe\u2019s regional seas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trapproject.eu\">TRAP<\/a> \u2013\u00a0<span class=\"SpellE\"><span class=\"GramE\">an INTERREG IV C project (LASA was involved as subcontractor). The Territories of Rivers Action Plans (TRAP) project was about bringing together<br \/>\nriver basin and landscape protection, with regional growth models and solutions; this is called \u201cintegrated river and river territory development\u201d.<br \/>\nThe overarching ambition of the TRAP project was to collect, analyse, transfer and disseminate good practices in river basin and territory management<br \/>\nin the Thematic Areas of Governance, Monitoring, Aquatic Environment and River Tourism.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wstore2.eu\">WSTORE2<\/a> \u2013\u00a0<span class=\"SpellE\"><span class=\"GramE\">a Life+ Environment Policy and Governance project for<br \/>\nreconciling agriculture with environment through a new water governance<br \/>\nin coastal and saline areas; the project focused on the natural area of Vallevecchia, near Caorle (NE Italy)<br \/>\n[<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wstore2-lasa.dii.unipd.it\/wstore2\/index.php\/it\">Internal Data Server<\/a>]<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lifevimine.eu\">LIFE VIMINE<\/a> \u2013 \u00a0<span class=\"SpellE\"><span class=\"GramE\">A Life+ Nature project for the definition and application of an integrated approach to\u00a0the sustainable conservation of the salt marshes (\u201cbarene\u201d) of the Lagoon of Venice; <u>the project run from 02\/09\/2013 to 01\/09\/2017 and was\u00a0coordinated by LASA \u2013 DII.<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.regione.veneto.it\/web\/sanita\/progetto-comunitario-life\">LIFE PHOENIX<\/a> \u2013 \u00a0<span class=\"SpellE\"><span class=\"GramE\">A Life+ Environment and Resource Efficiency project aiming to demonstrate how a new interinstitutional governance system,\u00a0supported through innovative forecast tools based on monitoring, can manage risks related to\u00a0the diffusion of persistent mobile organic contaminants \u00f1 with a particular focus on\u00a0PerFluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) \u00f1 more effectively and efficiently. The project started on 01\/09\/2017 and is ongoing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">LASA is partner of the <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eip-water.eu\/SmartRiverNw\">Smart Rivers Network Action Group<\/a> \u2013 European Innovation Partnership on Water (EIP Water).<br \/>\nProposed by the Europe 2020 Innovation Union flagship initiative, EIP\u2019s aim to speed up innovations that contribute to solving societal challenges, enhance Europe\u2019s competitiveness and contribute to job creation and economic growth.<br \/>\nThe Smart Rivers Network Action Group promotes multi-stakeholder participative governance in the management of European hydrologic basins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">LASA is partner of the project \u201cValorizziamo i Canali Cittadini\u201d (2018-2019), led by the City of Padova.Among other things, this pilot project aims to demonstrate the efficacy and sustainability of a novel management system for the channel network of the historical centre\u00a0of Padova which is based on regular actions of ordinary maintenance of the riparian and aquatic environment and the connected green spaces.<br \/>\nExamples of such actions include regular vegetation management and removal of litter and wastes. LASA monitors the benefits of the management\u00a0approach, which are environmental (e.g. the regular presence of working staff allows to manage the vegetation of the water-bank interface with more care), social (e.g. creation\u00a0of regular local jobs), and economic (e.g. mainly manual labour is needed, which is relatively inexpensive and particularly cost-efficient\u00a0in hard-to-access locations such as the banks of the city channels). It implements\u00a0several monitoring activities, ranging from water\u00a0sampling (using\u00a0the best\u00a0available preservation techniques for the samples) to specialized\u00a0chemical analysis of the various forms\u00a0of pollutants and data processing.
